Shu Lea Cheang

"Shu Lea Cheang is a Taiwanese-American artist and filmmaker, working with net art, participatory multi-player performance, video, and installation. Having an extensive background in art activism, her work promotes freedom of expression and critiques political oppression, technological, and environmental issues. She earned a BA degree in History from National Taiwan University in 1976 and later moved to the United States, where she gained an MA in Cinema Studies from New York University in 1979. At the start of her artistic career she was a member of the New York City alternative media collectives, such as Paper Tiger TV and Deep Dish TV. As a multimedia artist, she gained recognition for her net art piece BRANDON (1998-1999), the first-ever Guggenheim Museum’s web art commission. One of Cheang’s most recent and extraordinary commissions is the solo exhibition 3x3x6 for the 58th Venice Biennale (2019), where the artist represented Taiwan. In this commission she transformed the Taiwanese Pavillon into a high-tech surveillance system rethinking how communication and surveillance technologies are affecting human identities. Shu Lea Cheang has participated in many renowned international biennials, including Performa Biennale 19 (New York), the 11th Taipei Biennial (2018), the 50th and 58th Venice Biennale, the 1992 and 1994 Whitney Biennials, and others. She has also developed projects for the world’s most important institutions, like Prado Museum (Madrid), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), The New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York) and more. Her works are included in the world’s key permanent collections contemporary art: the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), The Guggenheim Museum (New York); NTT InterCommunication Center (Tokyo); Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and DSL collection (Paris).
